The term "optical depth" used in the text of problem 31. is not the dimensionless quantity defined
e.g. by Wikipaedia, but it means the quantity "a" with dimension of length, occuring in the formula
of the LambertBeer law: I(x)=I_0 * exp(x/a), where I_0 is the intensity of the radiation incoming
into the absorbing layer, and I(x) is the intensity of the attenuated radiation on the other side of the
absorbing layer of thickness x.
